Gikongoro is a city in Nyamagabe District, in the Southern Province of Rwanda. It lies in the country's southern highlands, a region of hills and elevated terrain.
The city serves as an administrative and commercial centre for the surrounding Nyamagabe District area. It is located near the edge of Nyungwe Forest, one of Rwanda's largest remaining tracts of montane rainforest, which lies to the west.
Gikongoro is also associated with the Kibeho area to its south, a site of reported Marian apparitions in the 1980s that later became a place of pilgrimage.
