Stefan cel Mare is a city in Neamț County, in the historical region of Moldavia, eastern Romania. It lies in the eastern part of the county, in the area around the Siret river corridor, and is one of several settlements in the region named after Stephen the Great, the medieval ruler of Moldavia.
The city is named for Stephen III of Moldavia, known as Stephen the Great, who was Voivode of Moldavia from 1457 until his death. He is remembered as one of the most prominent rulers of late medieval Eastern Europe, noted for his long reign, military leadership and diplomacy, and for his efforts to preserve Moldavian autonomy against the Ottoman Empire, Poland and Hungary. He is canonised by the Romanian Orthodox Church and is regarded as a national hero in both Romania and Moldova.
Stefan cel Mare is administratively part of Neamț County, whose seat is the city of Piatra Neamț. The surrounding area is known for its association with Stephen the Great, including the medieval princely court and monasteries of the former Moldavian capital at Suceava region and the Neamț monasteries. The city serves as a local centre for the surrounding rural communes.
