Magsaysay is a municipality in the province of Misamis Oriental, within the Northern Mindanao region of the Philippines. It is one of the province's interior towns, situated in the upland area south of Cagayan de Oro and inland from the coastal settlements along Macajalar Bay.
The town is named after Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay Sr., the seventh president of the Philippines, who served from 1953 until his death in a plane crash in Cebu on March 17, 1957. Before the presidency, he was an automobile mechanic by profession, a guerrilla leader during the Pacific War, military governor of Zambales, a Liberal Party congressman for Zambales's at-large district, and Secretary of National Defense under President Elpidio Quirino. He was elected president under the Nacionalista Party banner, the youngest person elected to the office and the second youngest overall, and was the first Philippine president born in the 20th century and the first born after the Spanish colonial era. His successor, Carlos P. Garcia, assumed the presidency, and Magsaysay remains the most recent Philippine president to have died in office.
Like several other places in the country, the municipality carries the name of the former president, a common practice in the Philippines for towns and local government units established or renamed during and after his administration.
