Vitarte is a city in the Lima region of Peru. It is the capital of Ate District, one of the forty-three districts that make up Lima Province. The district is also commonly known as Ate-Vitarte, reflecting the close association between the two names.
Ate District was founded in 1821, and the city of Ate served as its capital until 1951, when the seat of the district government was moved to Vitarte. Since that change, Vitarte has functioned as the district's administrative center.
Vitarte lies within the Lima metropolitan area, the national capital region of Peru. Its status as the district capital distinguishes it from the older settlement of Ate, which held that role for the district's first 130 years.
