Sivia is a town in central Peru and the capital of Sivia District in Huanta Province, within the Ayacucho Region. It sits on the west bank of the Apurímac River, roughly 3 km (1.9 mi) from the town of Pichari, which lies on the opposite bank and serves as the capital of Pichari District in La Convención Province, Cusco Region.
Both Sivia and Pichari lie within the zone known as the Valley of the Apurímac and Ene River, commonly abbreviated VRAE. The area is a major center of coca production, and it has been marked by high levels of childhood malnutrition and poverty.
Because of those conditions, the government of Peru selected the VRAE to launch its National Strategy for Growth program in 2007.
