Chuschi

Peru

Chuschi is a town in the Chuschi District of the Cangallo Province, in the Ayacucho Region of Peru. It is the administrative centre of its district, located in the Andean highlands of the country's south-central interior.

The town is notable in modern Peruvian history as the site of the opening action of the internal conflict between the Peruvian state and the Shining Path guerrilla movement. On May 17, 1980, Shining Path guerrillas burned ballot boxes in Chuschi, an act regarded as the beginning of their war against the Peruvian state.

Chuschi was also the scene of a later episode of that conflict: on March 14, 1991, government forces carried out what is known as the Chuschi massacre in the town.
