Yanque

Peru

Yanque is a town in the Arequipa Region of southern Peru, located in Caylloma Province within the Colca Valley. It sits at an elevation of roughly 3,400 metres above sea level, on the banks of the Colca River, near the better-known town of Chivay.

The town is one of the historic settlements of the Colca Valley and is known for its colonial-era church, the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción, which dates to the seventeenth century and features a carved stone facade. Yanque also serves as a base for visitors exploring the Colca Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world, and the surrounding terraced agricultural landscape.

Its economy is based largely on agriculture and tourism, with local communities maintaining traditional farming practices on pre-Columbian terraces. The area is also known for its thermal springs and for the Andean condors that can be seen in the nearby canyon.
