Mollendo is a coastal town situated on the Pacific Ocean in the Arequipa Region of southern Peru. It serves as the capital for both the Mollendo District and the Islay Province.
Historically, Mollendo functioned as the primary port on the Peruvian southern coast until the mid-20th century when Matarani was developed as the main commercial hub. During the period between 1830 and 1880, the town was a significant center for the guano trade.
While the original port of Mollendo is currently in ruins, it continues to support the local economy by serving the fishing industry. All modern commercial shipping for the region is now conducted through Matarani, located approximately 12 kilometers to the north.
