Cumba is a district in the Amazonas region of northern Peru. It is one of seven districts that make up Utcubamba Province, the others being Bagua Grande, Cajaruro, El Milagro, Jamalca, Lonya Grande, and Yamón. The district lies in the Utcubamba river valley, a warm, relatively low-lying area of the Amazonas region that contrasts with the cooler highland provinces to the south and west.
As a district rather than a large urban centre, Cumba is administered by a municipal government headed by a mayor and council, and it functions as a local seat for the surrounding rural communities. Its economy is based mainly on agriculture, with crops such as rice, coffee, and fruit grown in the valley, along with small-scale livestock raising.
Cumba is reached by road from the provincial capital, Bagua Grande, and from the city of Chiclayo on the coast, via routes that descend into the Utcubamba valley. The area is known for its warm climate and its position within the Amazonas region, which is otherwise associated with cloud forest and mountain terrain.
