Balsas

Peru

Balsas is a district of the province of Chachapoyas, in the Amazonas region of Peru. It lies in the country's northern highlands, within the same province as the regional capital, also named Chachapoyas.

The district was created during the era of Peruvian independence, between 1821 and 1824, making it one of the older administrative divisions in the province. Its establishment in that period places it among the districts organised as Peru reorganised its territory following independence from Spanish rule.

As a district, Balsas forms one of the constituent administrative units of Chachapoyas Province, alongside the provincial capital and other surrounding districts. The area is part of the Amazonas region, a department in north-eastern Peru known for its Andean terrain and its proximity to the Amazon basin.
