Ōtara is a suburb located in South Auckland, New Zealand. It is situated approximately 18 kilometres southeast of the Auckland City Centre and lies near the head of the Tāmaki River.
The area is traditionally part of the rohe of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki. The name Ōtara refers to Ōtara Hill, also known as Te Puke ō Tara, which was a volcanic hill and a former pā belonging to the Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki people located to the north of the suburb.
Historically, the land was part of the Goodfellow family farm from 1851 to 1910. During the 1910s, the area served as an agricultural college managed by the Dilworth Trust.
