Kukra Hill

Nicaragua

Kukra Hill is a municipality and city in the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region of Nicaragua. It lies about 415 km from Managua and 30 km north of Bluefields, and the municipality covers 1,193.23 km² with a population of roughly 10,159. It was granted municipal status on October 6, 1989; before then it was administratively part of the municipality of Bluefields, in the former department of Zelaya. The municipality is bordered by El Tortuguero and Laguna de Perlas to the north, Bluefields to the south, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and El Rama to the west, with the Escondido River forming part of the border with Bluefields.

The terrain is mostly a flat plain at about 50 m above sea level, rising to Kukra Hill itself, the municipality's highest point at 192 m. The climate is very humid tropical rainforest, considered one of the rainiest in the country, with annual rainfall typically of 2000–3000 mm. The area is drained by the Río Escondido and the Kukra, Kama, Ñarí, and Dos Bocas rivers, historically important transport routes, and it lies within the area of influence of the Wawashang Natural Reserve. The name derives from the Kukra people, related to the Ulúa, who historically inhabited the territory; today only place names such as Kukra Hill, Kukra River, and Kukra Point recall them. The population is multiethnic, including Creole, mestizo, Miskito, Ulwa-descended, and Garifuna communities, and most residents speak Spanish.

The economy rests mainly on livestock raising and farming, along with agro-industry, commerce, and artisanal fishing; extensive African palm plantations are part of the productive landscape. The municipality is nicknamed "Land of the Deer and the Mangosteen," and its Mangosteen and Deer Festival is held on August 6. Patron saint festivities for Saint John Baptist de La Salle take place May 12–14, and Palo de Mayo, a traditional dance and festival important to the Creole community, is also celebrated. Boats connect the town to Bluefields via the Cukra River and Bluefields Bay, and a paved road links it to El Rama and Laguna de Perlas.
