Bluefields is a city and municipality located on the central Mosquito Coast in Nicaragua. It serves as the capital of the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region.
Historically, the city held significant importance as the political and administrative capital of the Kingdom of Mosquitia. During the 17th through the 19th centuries, this kingdom maintained independence and later functioned as a protectorate under Great Britain. Following the annexation of the kingdom in 1894, Bluefields became the capital of the Zelaya Department.
