Santiago de Tequila is a municipality and town located in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Situated approximately 60 kilometers from the city of Guadalajara, it serves as a central hub for the production and cultural heritage associated with its namesake spirit.
The region is renowned as the birthplace of tequila, a distilled beverage produced from the blue agave plant native to the area. While the heart of the agave plant was traditionally used to create fermented drinks, the introduction of distillation by the Spanish transformed the beverage into the modern form of tequila. Due to its historical significance and the cultural importance of the production process, the town and its surrounding landscape were designated as a World Heritage Site.
In addition to its international recognition, the municipality was officially designated as a "Pueblo Mágico" by the Mexican federal government in 2003. This status highlights the town's cultural importance and its role in preserving the traditional methods of agave cultivation and distillation.
