Plymouth is a ghost town and the de jure capital of Montserrat, an overseas territory of the United Kingdom in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles. Located in the Saint Anthony region, it holds the distinction of being the only ghost town that serves as the capital of a political territory.
The town became uninhabited due to volcanic activity from the Soufrière Hills volcano, which began a major eruption sequence in 1995. The subsequent destruction rendered much of Plymouth and surrounding areas uninhabitable, forcing the relocation of the island's administrative functions and population. Despite no longer being a functioning city, Plymouth retains its official status as the capital, though the practical seat of government has shifted to other locations on the island.
