Tonami is a city located in the Toyama Prefecture on the western coast of central Honshu, Japan. As of March 2018, the city encompassed an area of approximately 127.03 square kilometers with a population of roughly 48,659 people. It serves as a regional hub accessible via local Japan Rail lines and the Ainokaze Toyama Railway, providing connections to major cities such as Toyama City.

The city is notably recognized for the Tonami Yotaka Matsuri, an annual night festival held in June. This event features large floats decorated with lanterns that are carried at high speeds through the streets by competing crews. A distinctive characteristic of this festival is the intentional collision of these floats to create a dramatic spectacle. The celebration also includes traditional singing and food stalls offering local delicacies.
