Suwa is a city located in the Nagano Prefecture of Japan, situated along the shores of Lake Suwa. The city covers an area of approximately 109.17 square kilometers and serves as a regional hub accessible from Tokyo via train. It is characterized by its distinct local traditions and historical landmarks.
The city is home to the Suwa Shrine, one of Japan's most venerable shrines, which features four outposts and notable large shimenawa ropes. The shrine site includes a ritual purification spring guarded by a dragon sculpture and houses logs from the Onbashira Festival. This festival has a 1,200-year history and occurs every six years; it is noted for its danger as participants ride large logs down steep mountainsides.
Other notable features of Suwa include Takashima Castle, which sits in the town center surrounded by a moat and a public Japanese garden known for seasonal displays. The region also produces traditional sake at Masumi Brewery, a producer with 27 generations of history. The area is noted for its early autumn foliage, which typically begins in October.
