Yamaga is a city located in the northeastern region of Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan. Situated on the Kikuchi River plain, it was historically a prosperous settlement along the Buzen Kaido trade route. The area is known for its rich agricultural land and high-quality rice production. The city covers an area of 299.69 square kilometers with a population of approximately 48,181 as of July 2024.
The city is characterized by its traditional atmosphere and cultural heritage. It features the Yachiyoza Theatre, one of only 17 remaining traditional Kabuki theatres in Japan, and the Yamaga Lantern Museum, which showcases local handmade paper lanterns. The town also contains a historic district known as Bunko Kaidan Street, featuring traditional shops, sake breweries, and cafes. Additionally, the region is noted for its hot springs (onsen) and its proximity to significant archaeological sites, including a large collection of Kofun burial mounds.
