Muroto is a city in Kōchi Prefecture, Japan. It is located on the Pacific coast at the southeastern tip of Shikoku, the smallest of Japan's four main islands. The city covers a total area of 248.18 square kilometres (95.82 sq mi).
As of 31 January 2024, Muroto had an estimated population of 11,633 living in 6,906 households, giving it a population density of 47 persons per square kilometre. These figures reflect the low density typical of a coastal municipality whose settled area is concentrated along a narrow shoreline.
Muroto is perhaps best known for Cape Muroto, a headland that forms the southern extremity of Kōchi Prefecture and of Shikoku. The cape and its surrounding waters are part of the Muroto UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised for the geological formations created by the subduction of tectonic plates off the coast. The area also lies in the path of typhoons that make landfall on the Pacific side of Japan, a factor that has shaped the city's landscape and history.
