Yubari

Japan

Yūbari is a city located in Sorachi Subprefecture, Hokkaido, Japan. It sits in the interior of Japan's northernmost main island, within the Sorachi subprefectural jurisdiction that forms part of Hokkaido's central region.

The city is best known for its history as a coal-mining centre; for much of the twentieth century Yūbari grew around the extraction of coal, and its fortunes were tied to that industry. After the mines closed, the city became known for efforts to reinvent itself, including the opening of a theme park and the marketing of Yūbari melon as a local specialty.

Yūbari's inland Hokkaido setting gives it a climate with cold, snowy winters and warm summers, typical of the island's interior. It remains a small city within Sorachi Subprefecture, and its name is shared with the Yūbari River and the surrounding mountainous area.
