Fukuoka

Japan

Fukuoka is a designated city located in the Kyushu region of Japan and serves as the capital of Fukuoka Prefecture. Situated along the shores of Hakata Bay, the city has functioned as a center for international commerce since ancient times. Due to its geographical position, it is considered the gateway to Japan, representing the nearest point among the country's main islands to the Asian mainland.

Human habitation in the area dates back to the Jomon period, with some of the earliest settlers arriving during the Yayoi period. The city rose to prominence during the Yamato period and developed a distinctive local culture and dialect. These unique characteristics persisted over time due to the region's significant distance from Japan's primary social and political centers in Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo.
