Gignod is a town and comune in the Aosta Valley region of north-western Italy. It is located in the Alpine valley of the Aosta, Italy's smallest region by area, which sits in the country's north-west and shares borders with France and Switzerland.
As a comune, Gignod is one of the many municipalities that make up the Aosta Valley, a region with a special autonomous status within Italy. The area is characterised by its mountainous terrain and is part of the historic Franco-Provençal cultural zone, where French and a local dialect have traditionally been spoken alongside Italian.
Gignod lies in the central part of the Aosta Valley, in the vicinity of the regional capital, Aosta. Like other settlements in the valley, it is situated among the Alps, and its position reflects the broader geography of the region, which is dominated by high peaks and the valley floor of the Dora Baltea river.
