Chamois

Italy

Chamois is a town and comune in the Aosta Valley region of northwestern Italy. It is one of the region's small Alpine municipalities, situated in the Italian Alps near Italy's borders with France and Switzerland.

The settlement lies at an elevation of roughly 1,800 metres above sea level, making it one of the highest communes in the Aosta Valley and in Italy. Its position high in the mountains means it is reached by a single winding road, and the surrounding terrain is dominated by alpine slopes and pastures.

Chamois is best known for being one of the few places in the Alps, and in Italy, that is effectively car-free: private motor vehicles are not permitted within the village, and access is by the access road, on foot, or by cable car from the valley below. This has helped preserve its character as a small, quiet mountain settlement.
