Capitignano is a comune and town in the province of L'Aquila, in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It should not be confused with places of similar name in other parts of the country; this Capitignano lies in the central Apennines of Abruzzo, not in Campania.
The town is located within the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park, a protected area of the central Apennines known for its high peaks, forests, and traditional mountain villages. Part of the territory of the municipality also falls within the natural reserve of Lake Campotosto and within the Valle del Tronto.
These designations mean that a portion of the comune's land is subject to conservation and protected-area management alongside the surrounding park and reserve. The municipality is therefore characterized chiefly by its position among these protected landscapes rather than by any single monument or attraction.
