Ramnagar is a town located in the Varanasi district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated adjacent to the city of Varanasi and functions as a municipal board within the region.
The town is notable for the Ramnagar Fort, which serves as the official residence of the King of Varanasi, also known as the Kashi Naresh. The fort and its associated museum house the history of the kings of Benares and have served as the home of the Kashi Naresh since the 18th century.
The Kashi Naresh is regarded by local residents as a religious head, a cultural patron, and an incarnation of Shiva. The area is also well known for the annual Ramlila performances held under the patronage of the King of Varanasi.
