Castlebar is the county town of County Mayo in Ireland's Connacht region. Developing around a 13th-century castle built by the de Barry family—from which it derives its name—Castlebar has become the administrative and economic focal point for its surrounding area. With a population of 13,054 according to the 2022 census, the town was one of Ireland's fastest-growing in the early 21st century.
The town holds significant historical importance, most notably as the site of the 1798 "Races of Castlebar," when French soldiers under General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert aided Irish rebels in defeating British forces. Castlebar was also where Michael Davitt founded the Irish National Land League in 1879. Today, the town serves as home to the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life at Turlough Park, housed in a restored 1865 estate, and hosts Atlantic Technological University. Key attractions include Lough Lannagh with its accessible paths and water sports facilities, Raheens Wood with its nature trail, and the Linenhall Arts Centre cultural venue. The Great Western Greenway walking trail passes through the town, connecting it to nearby attractions and extending toward Westport.
Castlebar has developed a reputation for quality of life, ranking as the best location for remote work in Ireland in 2022 and best town for work-life balance in 2024. The town supports active sporting communities, including Castlebar Mitchels GAA club, which reached two All-Ireland Senior Club Football finals in 2014 and 2016. Rail and road connections link Castlebar to Dublin and other regional centers.
