Tanggung

Indonesia

Tanggung is a town in the Central Java region of Indonesia. It lies in the regency of Grobogan, in the northern part of the province, roughly midway between Semarang and Surabaya. Like many settlements in Java's interior, it functions as a local administrative and market centre for the surrounding agricultural area.

The town is best known for its association with Javanese gamelan music. In the musical tradition of Central Java, irama is the term for the relationship between melodic tempo and the density of the various instrumental parts. It describes how the balungan, the elaborating instruments, and the gong structure relate to one another in time. Irama is distinct from tempo, since a single irama can be played at different speeds; the density of the parts is the primary factor. Tanggung is one of the named irama levels in this system, sitting between the slower and faster levels.

Beyond this musical connection, Tanggung remains a small regional town, and its significance is chiefly local rather than as a destination for visitors.
