Nea Ionia is a town and northern suburb located within the Athens agglomeration in the Attica region of Greece. It functions as a municipality within this administrative area.
The settlement was named after Ionia, a historical region in Anatolia. This naming reflects the migration of many Greeks from that region to Greece during the population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s. Many of the families residing in the town originated specifically from the town of Alanya, which is currently located in Turkey.
