Ciudad de la Paz, formerly known as Djibloho or Oyala and commonly called La Paz, is the official capital of Equatorial Guinea, though still under construction. Located in Djibloho province on the mainland in the equatorial forest region near the town of Mengomeyén, the city was established as an urban district in Wele-Nzas in 2015 and officially named Ciudad de la Paz in 2017. It serves as the administrative headquarters of Djibloho, Equatorial Guinea's newest province created in 2017.
On January 3, 2026, a presidential decree officially designated Ciudad de la Paz as the national capital, replacing Malabo, which had served as the capital from its location on Bioko island. The relocation plan was initiated in 2008 under President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo. The government cited the city's strategic geographic location as an ideal option for the capital and identified urban growth pressures and migration in existing cities as driving factors. The decree requires presidential services, state powers, constitutional bodies, government agencies, and public enterprises to relocate within one year, though it does not specify whether foreign embassies must move.
The city's infrastructure includes twin towers as part of a larger government complex designed to house government facilities, a business center, and conference rooms. The relocation is intended to modernize public administration, diversify development across the country, and strengthen national unity while addressing overcrowding in Malabo and Bata.
