Akwatia is a city located in the Eastern Region of southern Ghana. It serves as the capital of the Denkyembour district and functions as the central hub for the Denkyembour parliamentary constituency. Geographically, it is situated within the Birim River basin, positioned to the west of the Atewa Range.
The town is primarily recognized as the main center for diamond extraction in Ghana. Its name, which can also be spelled Akortia, translates to "He returned here or there" in the Anii language (formerly known as Oji-Ounji). As of 2013, the settlement had a recorded population of 23,766 people.
