Epsom is a town in the borough of Epsom and Ewell in Surrey, England, located approximately 14 miles south of central London. The town's name is first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century and is believed to derive from that of a Saxon landowner. Archaeological evidence indicates human activity in the area dating back to the mid-Bronze Age, though the modern settlement likely developed around St Martin's Church during the 6th or 7th centuries.
The town's street layout became established during the Middle Ages and has largely persisted to the present day. A notable architectural feature of Epsom is the clock tower on the High Street, which was erected in 1847–1848 and remains a dominant landmark in the town center.
