Ylitornio is a municipality of Finland, located in the province of Lapland. It lies along the Tornio River, which forms the border between Finland and Sweden in this region.
Directly across the river from Ylitornio is the Swedish town of Övertorneå, situated about 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) to the northwest by road. The two localities are connected by an international bridge, which crosses from Övertorneå via an island and enters Finland in a rural part of Ylitornio's municipality, roughly 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) north of the town itself.
Translated literally into English, the names of both locations mean "Upper Tornio," reflecting their shared position on the river.
