Simo is a municipality in Finland, located in the Lapland region in the northern part of the country. It lies roughly 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the Swedish border.
As a Lapland municipality, Simo belongs to Finland's northernmost and largest region, an area known for its vast forests, rivers and long seasonal contrasts between the midnight sun and polar night. The community is situated near the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, where the Simo River reaches the sea.
Simo is one of the smaller municipalities in Finnish Lapland, with a population of only a few thousand residents spread across a wide, sparsely settled area. Its location near the Swedish frontier places it within the cross-border cultural and economic sphere of the Tornio River valley, which links northern Finland and northern Sweden.
