Kuhmo is a town and municipality in Finland, located at the south-eastern corner of the Kainuu region. It covers an area of 5,456.78 square kilometres, of which 649.97 square kilometres is water, and has a population of 7,300, giving a population density of 1.52 inhabitants per square kilometre.
The municipality shares a 120-kilometre border with Russia. Its neighbouring towns within Finland are Hyrynsalmi, Lieksa, Nurmes, Ristijärvi, Sotkamo and Suomussalmi, while the neighbouring city across the Russian border is Kostomuksha. Vartius, one of the border crossing points between Finland and Russia, is located in northern Kuhmo.
