Kajaani is a town located in the Kainuu region of Finland. It serves as the regional capital and is situated southeast of Lake Oulu, which flows into the Gulf of Bothnia via the Oulu River.

The municipality has a population of approximately 36,000 residents, while the surrounding sub-region houses about 51,000 people. Kajaani ranks as the 32nd most populous municipality in Finland.
