Puumala is a municipality in Finland, located in the South Savo region. It is a small community by Finnish standards, with a population of 2,081 according to available figures.
The municipality covers a total area of 1,237.75 square kilometres (477.90 square miles), of which 443.17 square kilometres (171.11 square miles) is water. This means roughly a third of Puumala's territory consists of lakes and other inland waterways, a characteristic it shares with much of the Finnish Lakeland. The resulting population density is very low, at 2.62 inhabitants per square kilometre (6.8 per square mile).
Puumala's combination of a small resident population and a large, water-dominated land area places it among Finland's sparsely settled rural municipalities. Its location in South Savo, in the country's eastern lake district, shapes both its geography and its dispersed settlement pattern.
