Tous is a municipality in the Valencian Community of eastern Spain, located in the province of Valencia. It lies in the interior of the province, on the river Júcar, which flows through the area before continuing toward the Mediterranean coast.
The town is best known for the dam failure that occurred on 20 October 1982. Exceptionally heavy rainfall swelled the Júcar, and the operator of the Tous Dam was unable to open the spillway gate. Water overtopped the dam, which then failed, releasing a flood estimated at 16,000 cubic metres per second. The disaster caused more than 30 casualties and became widely known as La Pantanada.
That event remains the defining episode in the modern history of the municipality and is the principal reason Tous is remembered beyond its immediate region.
