Sopela, formerly known as Sopelana, is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay within the autonomous community of Basque Country in northern Spain. Situated in the comarca Mungialdea, the municipality lies on the northeast side of Bilbao and to the east of the Nervión river estuary.
The area covers approximately 820 hectares and includes annexed former towns such as Larrabasterra. As of the 2019 census, the population of Sopela is 13,878. The municipality is characterized by its landscape of green hills and beaches, making it a prominent suburb of Greater Bilbao with a commute time of approximately 35 minutes via metro.
