Markina-Xemein

Spain

Markina-Xemein (also known as Marquina-Jeméin) is a town and municipality in the province of Bizkaia, part of the Basque Autonomous Community in northern Spain. It lies in the Basque Country, a region of northern Spain along the Bay of Biscay.

The town's name derives from its geographic position between the provinces of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. The element "marca," Spanish for "mark," refers to this boundary location; the area was a point of contention where Gipuzkoans and Bizkainos frequently fought.
