Iurreta is a town and municipality in the province of Biscay, within the Basque Autonomous Community of northern Spain. It lies in the Durangaldea (Durango) area of the region, near the town of Durango.
Iurreta was incorporated into the municipality of Durango in 1926, ending its separate municipal status for most of the twentieth century. It regained its independence in 1990, once again becoming a municipality in its own right.
With the restoration of municipal independence, the traditional anteiglesia, or town meeting system of local government, was revived in Iurreta. This form of assembly-based local governance is characteristic of historical Basque municipal organization.
