Medellín is a village in the province of Badajoz, in the Extremadura region of Spain. It is a small settlement, distinct from the much larger city of the same name in Colombia.
The village is notable as the birthplace of the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés, who was born there in 1485. It was also the site of the Battle of Medellín, fought during the Peninsular War.
Its name was carried abroad: the Colombian city of Medellín, the second-largest city in that country, was named in honour of this small Spanish village, as were Medellín in Veracruz, Mexico, two cities in Argentina, and Medellin in Cebu, in the Philippines.
