Magacela is a municipality in the province of Badajoz, in the Extremadura region of southwestern Spain. It is located in the comarca of La Serena, a district of the province known for its dry plains and open rangeland.
The town sits at the foot of a hill crowned by the ruins of a castle, a fortress of Moorish origin that was later held by the Order of Alcántara following the Christian reconquest of the area in the thirteenth century. The old town retains a compact layout of whitewashed houses and narrow streets typical of the region.
According to the 2004 census (INE), Magacela had a population of 661 inhabitants. The surrounding countryside is given over largely to agriculture and livestock grazing, activities that have long shaped the local economy.
