Peralada

Spain

Peralada is a village in the province of Girona, in the Catalonia region of Spain. It lies in the comarca of Alt Empordà, in the northeastern part of the country near the Costa Brava.

The village was the home of the Frankish Counts of Peralada, who controlled this portion of the Marca Hispanica, the border territory established by the Franks between their realm and the lands to the south. These lands later became part of the territories held by the Count of Barcelona.

Peralada is also known for its castle, the Castell de Peralada, which dates from the medieval period and now houses a casino, a spa, and a library. The village hosts an annual music festival, the Festival Internacional de Música Castell de Peralada, founded in 1987, which stages opera and concert performances in the castle grounds and other venues in the area.
