Besalu

Spain

Besalú is a town in the comarca of Garrotxa, in the province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It lies in the northeast of the country, within the Garrotxa district of the Girona province.

The town is best known for its medieval old quarter and, in particular, its fortified bridge over the Fluvià river, a landmark that has come to symbolise Besalú. Its historic centre preserves a substantial legacy from its past as the seat of an independent county, including a mikveh, the remains of a synagogue, and the church of Sant Pere.

Besalú's well-preserved medieval character has made it a popular destination in the Garrotxa, a comarca known for its volcanic landscape and beech forests. The town is accessible by road from Girona and Figueres, and its old town was declared a historic-artistic site.
