The town is best known for its dramatic setting at the Pancorbo Gorge (Desfiladero de Pancorbo), a narrow pass through the Obarenes Mountains that has served as a strategic route between the Castilian plateau and the Ebro valley since ancient times. The gorge has been fortified at various points in history, and the remains of defensive structures are still visible on the surrounding heights.

According to the 2004 census (INE), the municipality had a population of 464 inhabitants. The town's historic quarter, clustered at the mouth of the gorge, contains examples of traditional Castilian architecture, including the Church of Santiago and remnants of its medieval past.
