The municipality is small and rural. According to the 2009 census carried out by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (INE), it had a population of 218 inhabitants. Its name, meaning "Bridge of the Queen of Jaca," reflects its historical association with the nearby city of Jaca, a traditional centre of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

As a municipality of Jacetania, Puente la Reina de Jaca belongs to one of the historic comarcas of Aragon, a mountainous area whose principal urban reference is Jaca. The village is one of many small settlements scattered across this Pyrenean territory, where population figures have long remained low.
