María is a municipality in the province of Almería, within the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is one of the small inland settlements that make up the comarca of Los Vélez, a district in the northern part of Almería province.
The municipality sits in a semi-arid landscape typical of this part of Andalusia, at an elevation of roughly 1,200 metres above sea level. Its territory is sparsely populated, with the population concentrated in the main village and a few smaller outlying nuclei.
Like other municipalities in the region, María is administered by a local council (ayuntamiento) and forms part of the wider provincial and regional structures of Almería and Andalusia.
