Illar is a municipality in the province of Almería, within the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is one of the many small municipalities that make up the Almería province, a largely rural and mountainous area in the country's southeast.
The town is situated in the interior of the province rather than on the Mediterranean coast, in the foothills of the Sierra de los Filabres range. Like much of inland Almería, the surrounding landscape is dry and hilly, and the local economy has traditionally been tied to agriculture, particularly the cultivation of olives and almonds suited to the arid climate.
Illar is part of the Alpujarra Almeriense comarca, a district known for its whitewashed villages and Moorish-influenced architecture. The municipality is small in population and retains the quiet, traditional character typical of the province's inland settlements.
