Garrucha

Spain

Garrucha is a municipality in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. It lies on the Mediterranean coast of south-eastern Spain, on the right bank of the river Antas, and functions as a seaport.

The town's harbour is defended by an eighteenth-century castle and affords shelter to large ships. It was historically the natural outlet for the commerce of a once thriving agricultural and mining district. At the beginning of the twentieth century Garrucha had a considerable trade in lead, silver, copper, iron, esparto grass and fruit. In 1998 the town had a population of 5,000.

Today the only export from the harbour is gypsum mined in Sorbas, with a million metric tonnes exported annually. Besides cargo ships, the port is home to a small fishing fleet and has approximately 300 moorings for leisure boats.
