Espiel is a municipality in the province of Córdoba, in the Andalusia region of southern Spain. It lies in the northern part of the province, within the Sierra Morena area, a landscape of rolling hills, oak woodland and open country typical of that part of Andalusia.
According to the 2006 census (INE), Espiel had a population of 2,422 inhabitants. The municipality covers a fairly extensive rural territory, and its settlement pattern reflects this, with the population concentrated in the town itself and dispersed among surrounding hamlets and farmsteads.
Espiel's economy has traditionally been tied to the land, with agriculture and livestock raising forming the basis of local life, alongside other rural activities common to the Sierra Morena. The town's position in the north of Córdoba province places it within a region known for its natural scenery and its distance from the larger urban centres of Andalusia.
